9 Pouring Nozzles – Type II Cans 9.1 A flexible or rigid nozzle of a Type II can shall be of corrosion-resistant metal, or ferrous metal provided with a corrosion-resistant coating that complies with the requirements in Corrosion-Resistant Coatings, Section 15. 9.2 The metal used in a flexible nozzle shall not be less than 0.015 inch (0.38 mm) thick. A rigid nozzle shall not be less than 0.035 inch (0.89 mm) thick. 9.3 The discharge end of a flexible nozzle shall be provided with a ferrule of corrosion-resistant metal. The ferrule shall be secured in place and shall enclose all sharp or projecting edges. 9.3.1 Deleted 9.3.2 Deleted 9.4 The valve or inlet end of a flexible nozzle shall be supported or reinforced by a closely wound external helical spring. The spring shall not be less than 3 inches (76.2 mm) long and shall be secured in place. 9.5 A nozzle shall be secured to a fitting constructed for attachment to the pouring spout. This fitting, in turn, shall be attached to the pouring spout by a method that provides a permanent connection that is free from leakage. Also, see Flexible Nozzle Test, Section 23. 9.6 A nozzle intended for use in automotive fueling applications for pouring directly into the fuel tank of a vehicle requiring unleaded gasoline shall have a maximum outside diameter of 0.86 inch (21.8 mm). When a safety can is equipped with a nozzle having an outside diameter not greater than 0.86 inch (21.8 mm), the safety can is not prohibited from being marked in accordance with paragraph 28.3. 10 Valves and Valve-Operating Mechanisms 10.1 A valve-closure cap shall be of corrosion-resistant metal or of ferrous metal provided with a corrosion-resistant coating that complies with the requirements in Corrosion-Resistant Coatings, Section 15. Cast iron shall not be used. 10.2 A cast closure cap shall not be less than 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) thick. A sheet metal cap shall not be less than 0.054 inch (1.4 mm) thick.
10.5 A valve closure disc shall be mechanically secured in place and shall be replaceable. If the disc is secured to the cap by a screw, the screw shall be provided with a washer. If the annular bearing face of the screwhead is not less than 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) wide, a washer need not be provided, but the hole in the disc for passage of the screw shall be close fitting. 10.6 The bearing pin of a valve or valve-operating part shall not be less than 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) in diameter and shall be either headed over at each end or otherwise secured to prevent it from working out of position. 10.7 All mechanical components shall have sufficient strength to prevent bending, twisting, or subsequent damage to other components. The mechanical linkage associated with the valves shall have positive actuating, non-binding linkage. 11 Springs 11.1 A spring shall be of corrosion-resistant metal or of steel provided with a corrosion-resistant coating that complies with the requirements in Corrosion-Resistant Coatings, Section 15. The spring wire shall have a diameter of not less than 0.05 inch (1.3 mm). 12 Handles 12.1 A can shall be provided with a handle having a hand grip arranged for carrying the can. 12.2 A can having a nominal capacity of 2 gallons (7.6 L) or more shall be provided with a bottom handle if it is not provided with a support ring or equivalent means for gripping the bottom of the can when pouring. 12.3 A carrying handle shall not be more than 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) wide. The hand clearance shall not be less than 1 inch (25 mm) from the handle to the container surface and 3-1/2 inches (89 mm) from one handle support to the other. 12.4 Edges of a sheet metal handle shall be hemmed, rolled, or wired.
